Understanding Your GPA

The math behind your academic performance.

Weighted vs. Unweighted

Unweighted GPA is calculated out of a 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA accounts for class difficulty, adding up to 1.0 point for AP/IB courses.

The Calculation

GPA is calculated by multiplying the grade value by the course credits, summing all points, and dividing by the total number of credits.

Cumulative Impact

Your cumulative GPA includes your historical performance. As you earn more credits, a single semester's grades impact the cumulative average less.

Latin Honors

Cum Laude usually requires a 3.5 - 3.7 GPA, Magna Cum Laude 3.7 - 3.9, and Summa Cum Laude 3.9 - 4.0+ depending on the institution.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions regarding GPA calculations.

Do pass/fail classes affect my GPA?
Generally, "Pass" grades do not affect your GPA but do award you credits. "Fail" grades often negatively impact your GPA (0.0 points), though policies vary by institution.
How do I calculate high school GPA?
Use the standard A=4.0 scale. If your school uses weighted grades, change the "Type" dropdown to Honors (+0.5) or AP (+1.0) to correctly calculate your weighted average out of 5.0.
What is a "good" GPA?
This depends entirely on your goals. Generally, a 3.0 (B average) is considered good, while competitive graduate programs often look for 3.5 or higher.
Why do my institution's numbers look different?
Different institutions use different grade scales (e.g., an A- might be 3.66, 3.7, or just 4.0). Our calculator uses the most common standard 4.0 scale.
Can I save my entered courses?
Currently, data is not saved across sessions. Please use the Export Excel or Export PDF features to save a permanent copy of your entered grades.
