Understanding GST in India

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect multi-stage, destination-based tax that is levied on every value addition in India. It replaced multiple cascading taxes levied by the central and state governments.

CGST

Central GST is collected by the Central Government on an intra-state sale (e.g., a transaction happening strictly within Maharashtra).

SGST

State GST is collected by the State Government on an intra-state sale. For any intra-state transaction, the GST rate is usually split 50/50 between CGST and SGST.

IGST

Integrated GST is collected by the Central Government for inter-state sales (e.g., selling goods from Maharashtra to Gujarat). The collected tax is then shared with the destination state.

Exclusive vs Inclusive

Adding GST (Exclusive): Calculates tax from the net value and adds it. Reverse GST (Inclusive): Extracts the tax component from an already-billed total value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions regarding GST billing and structures.

How is Reverse GST calculated?
To calculate the original tax-exclusive price from a GST-inclusive price, use the formula: Original Price = Inclusive Price / (1 + (GST Rate / 100)). For example, if you pay ₹1180 inclusive of 18% GST: ₹1180 / 1.18 = ₹1000 (Taxable amount) and the GST amount is ₹180.
Are there states where SGST is not applied?
Yes, Union Territories without a legislature (like Chandigarh, Andaman, Lakshadweep) apply UTGST instead of SGST. However, the calculation mechanics are exactly identical to SGST.
What are the active GST Tax Slabs?
Currently, goods and services are divided into five different tax slabs for collection of tax: 0% (essential items), 5%, 12%, 18% (most common for services), and 28% (luxury items).
