Understanding Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY)

SSY is an initiative by the Government of India under the "Beti Bachao Beti Padhao" campaign, targeted exclusively at the parents of girl children, offering incredible guaranteed returns.

EEE Tax Exemption

SSY falls under the coveted Exempt-Exempt-Exempt category. Your investment (up to 1.5 Lakhs) is exempt under 80C. The interest generated is exempt. The massive final maturity amount is completely tax-free.

The 15/21 Rule

You only deposit money for the first 15 years. From year 16 to 21, you don't need to deposit a single rupee, but your entire corpus continues to compound at the high SSY rate until maturity.

Eligibility

Parents or legal guardians can open up to two SSY accounts for two girl children in a family. The girl child must be younger than 10 years at the time the account is opened.

Where to Open?

You can easily open an SSY account at any authorized commercial bank (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, etc.) or at any Post Office in India. The account can be migrated seamlessly if you relocate.

Our tools are built with WCAG standards in mind, ensuring a seamless experience for users across all devices and assistive technologies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Important questions regarding withdrawals and the timeline of the scheme.

Can I withdraw the money before 21 years?
Partial withdrawal (up to 50% of the balance) is allowed once the girl child turns 18 years old or passes the 10th standard, specifically for her higher education expenses. Premature closure is only permitted under extreme compassionate grounds or if the girl gets married after 18.
What happens if the girl gets married before 21 years?
If the girl gets married after the legal age of 18, the SSY account must be closed. Normal operation beyond marriage is not permitted, and the accumulated balance will be handed over to her.
What if I default and miss a yearly payment?
The minimum required deposit in a financial year is just ₹250. If you fail to deposit even this amount, the account falls into 'default' status. It can be revived anytime by paying a nominal penalty of ₹50 per defaulted year along with the minimum deposits missing.
